Not enough physical memory

The more programs that you try to run at the same time will increase the amount of physical memory that is required by your computer. What slows a computer down is the time it takes to retreive the parts of the programs it is running from virtual memory.

It is a relatively simple process to install memory into your computer.

First you will need to find out what kind of memory you require and how much your motherboard will accomodate. You can find out this information by going to the manufacturers website and looking up your computer make and model. In the specifications area you should be able to find the maximum amount of ram your computer supports as well as the type (DDR, SDRAM, DDR2, DDR3, DIMM, RDRAM). They should also list the number of slots in your computer.

To find out how much memory you alreay have in your computer right click on the my computer icon and then click on the properties. At the bottom of the screen that opens it will tell you how much ram you have in your computer. (example 256MB of RAM)

You would then subtract this amount from the maximum amount that you found on the manufacturers website (example 768MB maximum minus 256MB installed leaves 512MB that can be installed) If you have 2 empty slots available then you can install either 1 512MB chip or 2 256MB chips.

Once you have the chips the installation can begin. First shut down your computer and unplug all connected peripherals. Place your computer on a table or desk with the right side of your computer on the table. Remove the case screws from the side panel and place them aside. Remove the panel by sliding back and then pulling up. Inside you will see the memory chip that is already in place. Before you touch anything in your case be sure to release all the static from your body by touching the metal frame of the case. This will prevent you from causing any possible damage to the components inside.

The slots where the memory chip reside have small clips that hold the memory in place. Gently press the clips outward and they wil release. Next insert the new memory in the slot and press down firmly but not to much pressure. The clips should lock the chip in place when fully seated. You can test by pulling up on the chip if it comes out easily then you need to press it in harder.

Now replace the side panel and screws and reconnect all the peripherals and power up your computer. Congratulations you have increased the physical memory of your computer and saved the cost of having a computer technician to install it. If you are unsure of your self and require assistance I would be happy to install your memory if you Live in the Savannah GA area.
